In 1933 John Collier was appointed commissioner of Indian Affairs. He initiated a number of reforms that became known as the Indian New Deal. As Americans we can learn how federal policies can impact a group of people by studying the effects of this reform movement on the Havasupai Indians of the Grand Canyon region. These lessons enable students to explore how past decisions concerning Grand Canyon can inform future decisions regarding the area and her peoples.
